Steve Hodgson, Head of Shared Services, HM Prison Service
Steve Hodgson is currently the Head of Shared Services for Her Majesty's Prison Service (HMPS) a post he has held for two years. HMPS is the Public Sector Prison Service in England and Wales. HMPS comprises of 130 Establishments, 50,000 employees and has a cost base of £2bn p.a. The Shared Service, which become operational in April 2006, delivers Finance, Purchase to Pay and Human Resources Shared Services to the HMPS Operation, the deployment will be complete in March 2008. The NPV of the Phoenix Programme which delivered the change is £102m and the annual cost reduction is C £32m p.a. Most of the Service is delivered from the Shared Service Centre in Newport South Wales.
Prior to this Steve was the HR Transformation Director at Royal Mail. Between May 02 and March 05 the HR Transformation Programme created and transformed an HR Shared Service for Royal Mail's 200k employees reducing the cost of the Service by £50m p.a. and delivering significantly improved customer service. This was recognised earlier this year when the Royal Mail entry won both Best Shared Service and Best Overall HR entry in a prestigious HR Industry Awards ceremony. In 2001 Steve was seconded from BAE SYSTEMS (where he was the HR Director of the Programmes Business Unit) to Xchanging HR Services as the Operations Director where he played a pivotal role in the set up of the joint venture operation.
Prior to his involvement in Shared Services he had a career in HR through the 1990's and the Royal Airforce where he was an Avionic Systems Engineer in the 1980's.
