The Hansard Society

The Hansard Society is the UK’s leading independent, non-partisan political research and education charity. We aim to strengthen parliamentary democracy and encourage greater public involvement in politics.

Our work is based on the belief that an effective parliamentary system is central to a successful democracy. At the heart of our work is the principle that civic society is most effective when its citizens are connected with the institutions and individuals who represent them in the democratic process. For more information about the Hansard Society and its programmes of work, visit www.hansardsociety.org.uk.

Bertelsmann Stiftung

In keeping with the longstanding social commitment of its founder, Reinhard Mohn, the Bertelsmann Stiftung is dedicated to serving the common good. The organisation was founded in 1977 and is a think tank which works operatively as an agent for social change. As a private operating foundation, its primary goal is to make a meaningful and enduring contribution to society. The focus is on projects that can decisively influence society's long-term viability.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung uses its knowledge and expertise to stimulate lively dialogue on the most pressing issues of our day and to provide policymakers with new momentum. Working with a wide range of partners, the Bertelsmann Stiftung seeks to identify social problems and challenges early on and develop exemplary solutions to address them.

The focus is put on areas where it has built competence through years of experience. The foundation employs some 300 highly qualified people, of whom 185 work in project management.

To foster creativity and synergy, staff members work together in project teams - often on several projects at a time and in more than one subject area.

The teams work toward improved education, a just and efficient economic system, a preventative healthcare system, a vibrant civil society and greater international understanding.

The foundation's nonprofit work is funded predominantly by income earned from its shares in Bertelsmann AG.

The network was created out of a European funded project which looked at trialling the coordination and submission of local epetitions and cross-border pan-European europetitions to the European Parliament during 2010, from 5 regions working with clusters of 19 Local Authorities in Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK, and potentially involving over 8 million citizens across the EU.

The EuroPetition process has been important in helping the European Commission determine best practice for the upcoming European Citizen’s Initiative.

Race Online 2012

The ambition of Race online 2012 is to ensure that everyone in the UK can enjoy the benefits of being online.

There are nine million adults in the UK who've never used the Internet. Over a third of these people are socially excluded and over six million are 65 years old or over. These people are missing out on what is now, for most of us in the UK, the primary route to information, education, jobs and customer savings.

We are building a cross-sector network of partners, spanning the public, private and charity sectors, to inspire, encourage, and support everyone in the UK to get online by the end of the Olympic year.
